Award Citation

Prof. Raymond Yeung is the Choh-Ming Li Professor of Information Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). In the late 1990s, he developed with his collaborators a fundamental theory called Network Coding that completely changed our understanding of network communication. This theory induced a paradigm shift and sparkled waves of research around the world. 

In 2010, Prof. Yeung established the Institute of Network Coding at CUHK, with support by a UGC Area of Excellence grant. This remains the largest engineering research project ever funded by the Hong Kong Government. 

Prof. Yeung was a recipient of the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship for 2000/01, the 2005 IEEE Information Theory Society Paper Award, the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award in 2007, the 2016 IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award, the 2018 ACM SIGMOBILE Test-of-Time Paper Award, the 2021 IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal, the 2022 Claude E. Shannon Award, and the 2022/23 RGC Senior Research Fellowship. His textbooks on information theory have been adopted by over 100 universities around the world. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, and Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.  

In 2011, Prof. Yeung and his collaborator invented the BATched Sparse Code (BATS), an efficient network coding algorithm that can be implemented on a wide range of computing platforms. BATS has already been applied in the Hong Kong Smart Lamppost System and a pilot network at Lantau Country Park for providing hikers with WiFi services.  

In this research project, Prof. Yeung and his team will conduct R&D to develop cost-effective solutions for BATS so as to pave the way for the mass adoption and deployment of BATS-enabled technologie
